The title speaks in both a literal and metaphorical fashion. I've taken pictures here many times before which relates to the title of this piece. However, this is more of a redemptive piece for me. To be perfectly honest, this entire year hasn't exactly gone as planned with how I wanted to live my life. I've felt like I haven't been able to overcome a lot of the struggles I face day in and day out, and it really starts to get to you after a while, especially when you can talk the talk and not walk the walk. It feels like a part of you is laughing at you because down to the core, I'm the only person that can make that decision to change. God can only show you the path, but it's up to you to walk it.

Great mood and emmotion on this, and I really feel you on how life really isnt going the way you want it to. 08-09 has been really shitty for me so far. Ive had to step away from a lot of things and just reflect on myslef. Hope stuff gets better for you man

Absolutely! You know, I realized that one time I was listening to an interview with Bono (singer of U2) and he said he always had more of a connection in writing music that is about the struggle of man and God because this is something that every Christian deals with. I think there is a lot of this in this photo/manipulation. Thanks!

Well, the life of a Christian in a lot of ways is like a constant struggle, but that doesn't mean we can ever keep seeking the perfection that is God you know? Christ is in us so anything is possible :)

I guess I know what you mean by your comment...been there done that, didn't like it. But there is always something to learn from all that and most of the time we don't know why God do what he does, we just have to let Him be God.

One of the hardest things for us to do as Christians is confess sin. I know this from my own experiences of being caught in a sin that I never thought I would ever be able to get away from. I knew (in my head) that God could give me the self-control I needed to be rid of my repeated sin. Time after time I would tell God I was sorry for the same thing, but I also knew that if I was a repeat offender, then I must not be too sorry for what it was I was doing--I had somehow convinced myself, "it's not that big of a deal..." "a lot of other people do this." "God love me anyway, right?" (actually... now that I reread it, I see "lies fed by Satan" written all over that) "but he doesn't want me to continue doing things that bring shame..." I was caught. I knew I was stuck. And I knew that the only way to be done with it, was to have (and I know you've had this before, too) an accountability partner. I had to tell someone. I had to get it off my chest. I'd be grounded in this thing for the rest of my life if I didn't.

Several months ago I confessed to an accountability partner, and I have not revisited that sin since then. I have been freed. And I've wanted to talk to people about this--about the importance of confessing sins to God. It's crucial to our Christian faith, and no one ever emphasized to me how necessary that one simple, painful thing is. I never felt like I had anyone that I could share my mess with. But it's so important that we be able to do this.

I've since heard prayer referred to as a spotlight. That anything we pray for sends a spotlight on that thing it catches heavenly attention, and demons can no longer work in the light--they've been exposed. In the same way, confession shines a light on our guilt. It brings it out into the open before God and before others, and God, people, angels, demons, and Satan can see that we're not hiding anything from the Master. They can no longer operate in the light of truth. I know that this is true because I've experienced it for myself. I have been set free. I have never felt so at peace with God.

In reading scripture today, I was looking for passages that emphasized the importance of confession, and I found this. And... I didn't have it memorized, actually, so this confirms what I just said about the "spotlight" thing. 1 John 1:5-10 and 2:1-6 (holy smokes, I just finished reading it, and it is SO IMPORTANT!! the passage condemned my old self as a liar.) "This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word has no place in our lives.

My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One [Halleluia!]. He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.

We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did."

Satan wants nothing more than for us to stay in the darkness--to keep fighting to redeem ourselves of our sins by ourselves--to hide from God--like Adam and Eve in the garden--to be separated from (I'm thinking this--the Holy Spirit's just giving this to me now. It makes so much sense to me. like one of those "ah-ha!" moments! :D Only... this is the big picture. This IS the gospel. This is the freaking AWESOME NEWS!!)--to be separated from God. He doesn't want us to take our dirt to the cross--to display it before God--to confess sin. He wants us stuck in shame and self-loathing until it's too late. Jesus was the final sacrifice--the "work completed" atonement offering that sets us free from sin, guilt, shame, self-loathing, and ultimately separation from a God who loves us, and knows us, and wants us desperately to be free to live a life that says, "no, I don't think I will" to the temptations that cross our path--to be free to live and to love like Christ. to really REALLY be like Christ so that we can be active participants in helping him complete his Kingdom work, which is to tell others this same good news, and to live lives filled to overflowing with love, compassion, joy, peace, and fellowship with God and with everyone we meet. For eternity.

I really like the positioning of the two figures. The you on the ground is struggling, aching almost. I love the tension in your hand! It's like you want to rip right out of your skin. I also like how the standing you is just waiting there patiently, laughing at your struggling self. I can totally see the, "get off your ass and do it already" vibe in this. Great stuff Keith, your meanings and purposes are really starting to show in your work.

Keep the faith man, it is hard, we all struggle with it. I find being a good Christian incredibly tough day to day, especially since I am a scientist. I tend to question everything...and that can really start to get taxing on someone's faith.

Thanks, it's really refreshing to see that my artwork is getting through to people. And yeah, I have been doing a lot better recently, I think I just got caught up in living downtown and going to the clubs and crap, and the fact that college was ending probably had something to do with it too.

Yeah I couldn't agree more, and the word struggle exactly describes the life of a Christian I think. I don't think any of life of any Christian has ever been a walk in the park. It's been a struggle for the biggest Christian icons through history that living of a life of faith is anything but a walk in the park. But hey, I tell this to a lot of my friends because a good friend told this to me once when I felt like I was really struggling with my faith. She said, "I don't think you're losing your faith, maybe you're just learning something new about God." I really felt better after that because during the times we struggle, we seem to focus on the now instead of looking at the big picture. We're still young and I'm sure we'll have a lifetime of experiences that will teach us new things about how God works, which to me, reinforces the fact that being a Christian is more than just believing in God; it's about our journey with God through our life :)

Beautiful piece my friend, and I understand very well what you're attempting to communicate... The battle we face on the inside is continual, but we know where our victory lies! Very true. It's a hard walk. This year has been rough with me too in terms of struggling faith and doubts, so it kind of relates in a small way. But anyways, I appreciate the reality and struggle of this piece. It makes me remember there are still other Christians out there with some form of struggle, so it inspires me to pray, so I guess, I'll be praying for you, the good and bad.
